January 21: “Folies Bergere” costume goes on display at The Mob Museum

Glamorous. Glittering.  Grand.

Iconic Folies Bergere costume from the historic production at the Tropicana joins The Mob Museum’s ever-growing collection of artifacts.

Towering headdresses. Feathers from all types of birds, beads and rhinestones. Some of the more lavish showgirl costumes could weigh 30-40 pounds each.

Folies Bergere Las Vegas, which ran 1959-2009 at the Tropicana, was inspired by the cabaret music halls from late 1800s Paris as well as the Ziegfeld Follies of Broadway fame. Joe Agosto, who oversaw the skim at the Tropicana for Midwest Mob families, served as executive producer of the production in the 1970s. Lou Walters, father of broadcast journalist Barbara Walters, is credited with bringing Folies Bergere to the Tropicana. He was the resort’s entertainment director at the time.

The Folies Bergere costume is on loan from the Nevada State Museum, which recently acquired a large collection of Folies Bergere costumes.
