Winning Bar to Receive Repeal Day Cup Trophy from Mayor Carolyn Goodman
LAS VEGAS (November 2014) – This Repeal Day, Friday, December 5, The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its second-annual Boss of the Bars contest for the area’s vibrant downtown nightlife scene. Scheduled to take place in the Museum’s historic courtroom at 9:30 p.m., it has quickly emerged as Las Vegas’ most eagerly anticipated cocktail and spirits competition. Qualifying rounds will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The bar with the best Prohibition-era-inspired cocktail will be awarded the one-of-a-kind Repeal Day Cup, a custom-designed, monumental trophy to display on its premises for one full year. In addition, the Cup will be engraved with the winning bar’s name for all posterity. Johnson Brothers of Nevada and Land Rover of Las Vegas are platinum sponsors of Repeal Day 2014.
Last year’s winner was Oscar’s Beef, Booze & Broads Steakhouse, whose cocktail, “The 21st Hour,” combined bathtub gin, sweet vermouth, yellow Chartreuse, acid phosphate, a dash of handcrafted bitters and stick of cinnamon.
All cocktails will be sampled and judged by an expert panel including Joy Robertson, host and producer, FoodChannel.com; Xania Woodman, senior editor, dining, beverage and nightlife, Vegas Seven; Ricardo Murcia, lead mixologist for Bellagio Resort & Casino; and Eric Gladstone, wine and spirits educator and writer. Mayor Carolyn Goodman will also give the winning bar a proclamation from the City of Las Vegas deeming it the victor in the “Boss of the Bars” contest. Prizes for the winning bars include roundtrip airfare vouchers from Orbitz Vacations to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada, a two-night stay at the Golden Nugget with $100 dining credit and show tickets, helicopter rides from Papillon, tickets to Jersey Boys, Dillard’s gift certificate and more.
Expert cocktail creators from downtown bars can enter the contest until Friday, Nov. 14, by sending an email to Karri Curiel (kcuriel@themobmuseum.org) with the recipe, title, description, bar logos and liquor order. Libations must meet the following criteria:
- First and foremost – each entry must be delicious
- Inspired by Prohibition-era cocktail
- Be made with base liquor provided by Johnson Brothers of Nevada and The Mob Museum: New Amsterdam plain or berry vodka; Brokers Gin; Pendleton Rye ‘1910’ Whiskey; Shellback white rum; Glen Moray Scotch; Bracero Tequila (Blanco Reposado or Anejo), Pisco Capel
- Contain a maximum of six (6) non-alcoholic ingredients provided by the competitor
- Feature only edible garnishes

Designate a sober driver, call a taxi or stay downtown. The Mob Museum will again provide the services of 456-Ride Las Vegas Designated Drivers Inc., to take any Repeal Day guests home for free if needed. Driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 is illegal across the country. But the amount of alcohol it takes to get to that number depends on a variety of factors such as how fast you drink, weight and gender. If you’ve had anything to drink, don’t get behind the wheel.
