LAS VEGAS (May 2021) – The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for June.

Writing the Mob: Chronicling Organized Crime in the 20th Century – A Virtual Author Talk Series
Date: The Mob Museum will host a series of Virtual Author Talks through June. Scheduled presentations follow:
Wednesday, June 2: Marilyn Greenwald and Yun Li, “Eunice Hunton Carter: A Lifelong Fight for Social Justice”
Tuesday, June 22: Anthony M. DeStefano, “The Deadly Don: Vito Genovese, Mafia Boss”

Description: This series of virtual presentations exploring the real stories behind the Mob’s heyday features authors of new organized crime histories and memoirs. From New York to Los Angeles and even Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the Mob’s tentacles reached into all corners of North America during the 20th century. Historians continue to explore this rich story to understand what really happened during the Mob’s American heyday.
Community Safety Forum: Preventing Violent Extremism
Date: Sunday, June 6
Time: 2 to 3 p.m.

Description: As national leaders warn of a growing threat of violent extremism in the United States, law enforcement agencies work to address local concerns. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) Counter Terrorism Section (CTS) is responsible for preventing terrorism and mass casualty attacks in Southern Nevada and will discuss efforts to prevent acts of violence carried out by individuals or groups motivated by extremist ideologies.

Police Reform in Nevada: The Impact of the 2021 Legislative Session
Date: Tuesday, June 8
Time: 7 to 8 p.m.

Description: Following a year of protests and calls for police reform, Nevada lawmakers are expected to conclude the 2021 legislative session on May 31 having debated and voted on a number of police reform bills. During this special program, political leaders, activists and police representatives will discuss which bills passed and which did not and how these legislative measures will shape the future of policing in Nevada.
Speakers:
- As the chief law enforcement officer for the state, Attorney General Aaron D. Ford strives to protect Nevada families. He believes there is no task greater than the pursuit of justice. His priority areas include what he refers to as the “Five Cs”: constitutional rights, criminal justice and reform, consumer protection, client service and community engagement.
- Leslie Turner is the senior organizer for the Mass Liberation Project. She is passionate about ending mass incarceration and the school-to-prison pipeline. Turner brings more than 15 years of experience working with adults, youth and families who have been directly impacted by systemic racism on various levels.
- Nevada Senator Dallas Harris was appointed to the 11th district of the state senate on December 4, 2018. Since graduating from law school in 2005, Harris has dedicated her career to public service.
- In 2009, Rick McCann played an instrumental role in launching the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers (NAPSO), where he currently holds the title of executive director, chief labor representative and legislative lobbyist. McCann also helped lead the formation of the Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition, a statewide group representing nearly 10,000 members to act as a single voice for law enforcement’s legislative and political action needs.
American Sherlock: The Forensic Science Pioneer Who Revolutionized Criminal Investigation
Date: Thursday, June 10

Description: Edward Oscar Heinrich was instrumental in the development of countless forensic science tools used to solve crimes, including blood spatter analysis and lie-detector tests. However, few people know the full story of this forensic pioneer who helped solve more than 2,000 cases. Kate Winkler Dawson, author of “American Sherlock: Murder, Forensics and the Birth of American CSI,” details how Heinrich changed the course of American criminal investigation.

“Operation Summer Camp”
Date: The Mob Museum will host four distinctive camps for youth ages 10 to 15 throughout June and July. The June camp dates follow:
“Operation: Investigation I”: Monday, June 14 through Friday June 18
“Operation: Forensic Science I”: Monday, June 21 through Friday June 25
Time: 9 a.m.

Cost: $150 per camper or $125 for Museum Members. For those purchasing multiple camp registrations, a 15 percent discount will be applied to the second or multiple registration(s).
Description: Calling all sleuths and science lovers, now’s your chance to put your detective skills to the test. Explore the exciting work of police officers, crime scene investigators and forensic scientists with this hands-on and immersive virtual summer camp series. You’ll join campers from around the country for interactive, live-instruction lessons all aimed at increasing your skills in a fun and engaging atmosphere. This is not your typical game of cops and robbers. Each summer camp includes 20 hours of fun and educational activities. Each participant is sent an activity kit with the supplies needed for their camp experience.
Taking Down the Real Sopranos: How an Undercover Officer Infiltrated a New Jersey Mafia Family
Date: Wednesday, June 23

Description: Former New Jersey undercover officer Giovanni Rocco tells his story of infiltrating the DeCavalcante crime family, one of the inspirations for “The Sopranos” television series. Rocco successfully worked his way into the DeCavalcante hierarchy, collecting enough evidence to eviscerate the Mafia organization. In this presentation, Rocco will describe dramatic moments and provide insight into the dangerous world he inhabited.
Speaker: Giovanni Rocco was an undercover law enforcement officer who spent most of his career as a member of state and federal task forces targeting organized crime. The culminating role of his service was the successful infiltration of one of America’s most violent and long-standing Mafia families. At the conclusion of this landmark investigation, Rocco retired from law enforcement and moved his family to an undisclosed location. He also authored several novels including “Giovanni’s Ring: My Life Inside the Real Sopranos.”
